This deep, closed form bowl was turned from a dogwood tree that my sister and brother-in-law had removed from their lawn in Roswell, Georgia. The tree had been killed by Dogwood Anthracnose, a fungal disease that began to appear in the 70’s and has now spread throughout the range of these beautiful trees. As the trees decline, they frequently become home to carpenter ants and all manner of wood-boring insects. They also become host to various fungi that produce spalting, an interesting pattern of lines and colors that announce the onset of rot. I am most grateful to my sister and her husband for saving the remains of this large dogwood and then going to the trouble of getting it to me. By their efforts, what would have otherwise become firewood found new life as artistic creations in wood.
